Perched above Porthcothan Bay on Cornwall's rugged north coast, The Cornwall Retreat is a home that feels intrinsically connected to its surroundings. Designed by De Rosee Sa Architects, the architecture is calm, measured and quietly confident, drawing on a restrained palette of natural materials that sits comfortably within the dramatic coastal landscape.
Rather than competing with its setting, the house embraces it. Two simple gabled forms echo the scale of neighbouring buildings, while timber, stone and clay create a home that feels grounded and enduring. Inside, texture, light and craftsmanship take precedence over decoration.
Running throughout the principal living spaces and continuing seamlessly onto the staircase, Tate Bute oak flooring forms an integral part of this carefully considered material palette, bringing warmth and continuity to the interior.

A Material Palette Rooted in the Landscape
One of the defining qualities of The Cornwall Retreat is the consistency of its material palette. Oak, natural stone, limewashed walls and handcrafted finishes appear throughout the home, creating spaces that feel effortlessly connected.
By continuing the same oak onto the staircase, the flooring becomes more than a surface underfoot. It creates a seamless flow between levels, reinforcing the clarity and simplicity of the design.
Large windows frame expansive coastal views, while the restrained interior palette allows the changing light and landscape to remain the focus.

Tate Bute: Oak Inspired by Time and Nature
The oak selected for this project is Tate Bute, part of our Tate collection. Defined by its distinctive band-sawn texture and softly weathered appearance, it feels entirely at home within the architectural language of the retreat.
Unlike the warm honey tones traditionally associated with oak, Tate Bute has an almost sun-bleached quality. Its colour recalls timber that has been left outdoors to weather naturally, lightened by years of sun, wind and rain until subtle silver-grey tones emerge. The result is an oak that feels settled rather than new, bringing an immediate sense of maturity to the interior.
The lightly band-sawn surface catches the changing daylight, introducing subtle depth and movement without distracting from the simplicity of the architecture.

Designed to Evolve
The Cornwall Retreat was conceived as a home for family life. Surfboards, sandy feet, gatherings around the kitchen and long summers overlooking the Atlantic are all anticipated within the design. Despite the exceptional level of craftsmanship, nothing feels overly precious.
Tate Bute shares that same philosophy. Its naturally weathered appearance allows the floor to age gracefully, with the gentle marks of everyday life adding character rather than detracting from it. Extending the same oak across both floors and stairs strengthens the sense of continuity, connecting spaces with quiet confidence.

Timeless by Design
What makes The Cornwall Retreat so compelling is not any single architectural gesture, but the confidence to let a carefully edited palette of materials do the work. Oak, stone, clay and natural light combine to create interiors that feel tactile, warm and deeply connected to their setting.
It is an approach that values longevity over fashion, where every material has been chosen not only for how it looks today, but for how beautifully it will age over the decades.
